Reconnecting With Nature
To reconnect with nature, you need to start with your senses. Stand outside and ground yourself. Focus just on your 5 senses. See the birds soaring overhead and the squirrels running through the yard. Hear the surrounding sounds of rushing water, moving tree limbs, and chatter in the distance. Feel the sun on your face or let the cool breeze chill you, feel the grass beneath your bare feet. Smell the fresh earth, wet with rain and ready for regrowth. Taste the fresh herbs beginning to sprout.
You need to literally stop and smell the flowers and embrace all that nature has! Take deep breaths and meditate outside. Go for a walk in the woods and listen to the silence. Start eating your meals outside, reading outside, and enjoying outdoor hobbies. Spend as much time as you can outside. Use things found in nature to make seasonal crafts and decorations. Bring the outdoors in, and keep the windows open when you’re stuck inside working. Mental health improves with your intake of sunlight and fresh air.
How to Reconnect With Nature
Remember the long sunny days of years past. What do you miss? What was your favorite? Late night car rides with the windows open and a warm breeze in your hair? Getting your hands dirty in the garden and watching your vegetables grow and your hard work pay off? Kayaking on the lake with friends and enjoying a picnic in the sun after? Start bringing yourself back to these feelings and letting it feel possible that the winter is gone and it’s time for rebirth in the Spring. Many of us take a break from the outdoors in the cold weather. Now it’s time to amp up the outdoor experience – and enjoy what nature offers us!Â
What can you do to get yourself back in appreciating and reconnecting with nature?
- Get outside first thing in the morning. You can start having your coffee or tea on the deck or the front porch, take a morning walk or jog. Take a trip around your yard to see what’s changing, blooming, and budding! Getting outside first thing in the morning helps your internal clock and sets you up for a productive day.
- Start your seedlings inside or in a greenhouse, ready your garden for the Spring.
- Learn about nature – download an app like PictureThis. It will give you information about any plant, like what species it is, preferable growing conditions, and how tall and wide it will get. Some libraries also have weekend classes on native plants and nature conservation.
- Visit nearby botanical gardens, state parks, and nature trails. Join a hiking club or a meet up with a friend.
- Take photos. Get the good camera out and take some nice pictures of whatever intrigues you. Take photos of anything that makes you feel good, a color that pops, or the sunlight hitting in just the right spot. Try to find a butterfly, an opening flower, and some bugs!
- Have a quiet picnic. Bring a blanket and snacks to a spot in the yard or a park, and take your shoes off. Look around and appreciate what you see and feel. Be mindful and in the moment.
- Touch nature. Feel the rough tree bark, dainty flower petals, dried mud, and the veins in a leaf. Think about why they feel this way.Â
- Clean up outside. Take a walk with a trash bag and clean up some trash that has accumulated over the winter on the sides of the road. It’s been windy!
- Hang a birdfeeder. Each morning, feed the birds and enjoy all the different ones that show up all day!
- Plant something new. Plant some trees, bushes, or flowers. Get excited about new plants, colors, and visitors to your yard. Buy plants that are popular among pollinators!
- Sleep with the windows open. Let the outdoor noises inside. Listen to the noises and feel the gentle breeze as you fall asleep.Â
- Dry some clean laundry outside. I always dry my comforter by hanging it over the deck – it smells so fresh and clean after!Â
Reconnecting with nature doesn’t stop there – there are so many ways to bring nature back into your world. Appreciate all it has to offer and get outside every day with intention. It will help lower your stress, increase physical fitness, and spark creativity.Â
Reconnecting With Yourself
Not only is reconnecting with nature important right now, but so is reconnecting with yourself. Many of us fall into bouts of seasonal depression and a funk that is hard to get out of in the winter months. The sunshine helps and of course getting outside, but the inner work is something only you can do. Start reconnecting with yourself in these simple ways:
- Journaling. Journal each day about what you appreciate, something funny or happy that happened that day, or something you’re looking forward to. Get whatever is bothering you off your chest and write it all down. You can take up a page, or write 2 sentences. Just try to be consistent and write every day.Â
- Meditation and Yoga. Meditation gets you do delve deeper into your thoughts and body and become more understanding of yourself. Yoga eases tension in your body and helps you become more in tune with yourself and how you’re feeling. Try them both outside!
- Creative Outlets. Are you a creative person? Did you used to paint and don’t know why you stopped? Did you love sewing but haven’t made anything in years? Well, it’s time to get back to who you are. Make time to do things that you enjoy.
- Spend time with people you want to spend time with. Take back control of your life. Get rid of toxic relationships or ones that simply don’t serve you and help you grow or make you happy. Make it a point to spend time with the people you actually want to spend time with, whose company you enjoy and feel energized by.
- Exercise. The feeling you have after a great workout is hard to recreate in any other way. The “yes, I did it!” feeling, along with feeling good about taking care of yourself and feeling strong is a great way to reconnect with yourself and your body.
